Crushed cars. That’s the image that first comes to mind when thinking about the Marina District. A 1989 earthquake caused devastation. Cars were crushed under collapsed buildings. The ground itself liquefied. This wasn’t some random event. The Marina District’s very foundation is responsible.

The Marina District wasn’t always here. It’s built on landfill. Before the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. The area was a muddy cove. This exposition celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal. It covered over 635 acres. The only things left from that fair are the Yacht Harbor and the Palace of Fine Arts.

The Marina was quickly developed after the exposition. Beautiful homes appeared. These had spectacular views of the bay. Across from Marina Green a popular kite-flying spot. Despite an early ordinance against it. The district thrived. Then the earthquake struck.

More than 30 structures were destroyed in 1989. The earthquake caused extensive damage. It highlighted the fragility of the district’s foundation. Firefighters even pumped water from the bay. This was because of broken water mains. The area was rebuilt quickly. It looks much the same today as it did in the 1920s.

The Marina District is a fascinating place. Its history is full of contrasts. From a grand exposition to devastating earthquakes. From a muddy cove to a fashionable neighborhood. It’s a story of creation and destruction. Of resilience and beauty. The next time you’re here. Remember those crushed cars. Remember the earthquake. Remember the incredible story of how this place came to be. It’s a story worth remembering.
