A beacon of contemporary art nestled within the Monash University’s Caulfield campus, we find the Monash University Museum of Art. Since its humble beginnings in 1961, MUMA, as its fondly called, has evolved into a dynamic hub for art enthusiasts and curious minds alike. Initially, it existed due to a fund established by Vice Chancellor Louis Matheson for acquiring artworks by living Australian artists. It started as a small gallery on the seventh floor of the Menzies Building, driven by the university’s vision to be a true center of Australian culture. This era saw John Waterhouse and the renowned art critic Patrick McCaughey become curators, shaping the gallery’s direction.

In 1975, McCaughey established a pivotal artist-in-residence program, recognizing the need to nurture emerging talent. Fast forward to 2010, MUMA found its current home, redesigned by the talented Melbourne architect Kerstin Thompson. This striking building isn’t just an exhibition space; it breathes life into art through its flexible design, hosting events and educational programs. One of its highlights is the Helen Macpherson Smith Education Space, a testament to MUMA’s commitment to fostering art appreciation.

But what truly sets MUMA apart is its dedication to pushing the boundaries of contemporary art. You won’t just find works confined within its walls. MUMA commissions temporary public art in the Ian Potter Sculpture Court. You’ll also encounter permanent installations throughout the university’s campuses. A shining example is the 2019 piece, “Weelam Ngalut” (Our Place), a beautiful welcome to Kulin country created by Quandamooka artist Megan Cope. Today, MUMA boasts an impressive collection of over 2,300 artworks. These are not just pieces to admire, but a vibrant conversation between renowned Australian artists like Kate Beynon, Robert Rooney, Tracey Moffatt, and Vivienne Binns.
