In the heart of Rio de Janeiro, a grand palace stands. This is the Centro Cultural do Poder Judiciário do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. It’s more than just a cultural center. It’s a place where law, history, and art intertwine. The Centro Cultural do Poder Judiciário, often referred to as CCPJ-Rio, was established in April 2009. The President of the Court of Justice of the State of Rio de Janeiro created it. It carries the legacy of Cultural EMERJ. This program ran from 2000 to 2008 at the State School of the Magistracy (EMERJ). The CCPJ-Rio found its home within the restored Antigo Palácio da Justiça. The palace reopened in November 2010. Since then, the CCPJ-Rio has curated the cultural agenda of the Court of Justice. It offers a diverse program of cultural events. These events aim to promote reflection on the values of justice. They encourage a positive relationship between society and the judiciary. The CCPJ-Rio enriches the Court of Justice’s role as a promoter of social transformation. It contributes to social harmony through its cultural initiatives. The Centro Cultural do Poder Judiciário occupies a historic building with a theatrical past. It stands on the very site where a theater once entertained Rio’s citizens. The Theatro da Praia de Dom Manuel opened its doors in 1834. Later, the theater was renamed Theatro São Januário. This very spot hosted Rio de Janeiro’s first masked ball in 1846. The Centro Cultural do Poder Judiciário continues this tradition of cultural expression within the grand walls of the Antigo Palácio da Justiça. The palace itself has a rich history. It served as the home of the Court of Appeals and the Court of Justice. In 1998, it became the home of the Museum of Justice. The CCPJ-Rio shares this historic space. This adds another layer of cultural significance to the building. The Centro Cultural do Poder Judiciário offers a unique experience. It combines the grandeur of a historic palace with the vibrancy of a cultural center. It’s a place where the past and the present meet. It’s a place where justice and culture intertwine to create a truly enriching experience.
