Whispers of faith echo through the decades here at the Pasaréti Református templom. This unassuming Bauhaus-style church holds a story of resilience, born from the dreams of a community. Pasaréti, in the 1930s, was a blossoming neighborhood. Many Reformed Christians, new to Budapest, longed for a spiritual home. They journeyed to the Szilágyi Dezső tér for services. But the distance spurred a dream: a temple of their own. The Pasaréti Református templom’s journey began not in grandeur, but in humble classrooms and borrowed spaces. Bible studies commenced in the Labanc utca school. Later, they found refuge in the János-kórház and the Fenyves utcai iskola. Finally, in a house on Gábor Áron utca, they established a small sanctuary and an office. In 1937, the mission church officially formed. The following year, they received a plot of land on Torockó utca, a gift from the city of Budapest. The dream was taking shape. Dr. Joó Sándor became their pastor. The Pasaréti Református templom, designed by the presbyters Szabó László and Márton, embraced the Bauhaus style, mirroring the modern aesthetic blooming in Pasarét. Construction began, fueled not by wealth, but by the tireless hands of the community. Architects, engineers, and church members worked side-by-side, donating their skills and time. The city’s support, in the form of land, further cemented their dedication. On June 12, 1939, the Pasaréti Református templom opened its doors. Bishop Dr. Ravasz László blessed the new sanctuary, a beacon of hope in a world teetering on the brink of war. The following year, the Angster workshop in Pécs installed a magnificent organ. The original structure pulsed with light. A wall of glass on the garden side, where the interior columns stand today, blurred the lines between the natural world and the sacred space. Sliding glass doors below and metal-framed windows above bathed the sanctuary in sunlight, a testament to modern architectural ingenuity. A simple, angular pulpit, adorned with folk motifs, stood as the focal point. A circular white marble communion table, resting on a grey marble podium, added a touch of elegance. The ceiling, with its exposed beams, echoed the coffered ceilings of traditional Reformed churches. An adjacent building, connected by a colonnade, housed the parish hall and offices. The Second World War cast a long shadow. The church suffered significant damage, and the glass wall was lost. Post-war realities forced the congregation to brick up the lower portion. The glass doors, symbols of openness and connection to nature, vanished. Despite these setbacks, the church thrived under Pastor Cseri Kálmán’s leadership. New spaces were added, enclosing the inner courtyard. The Pasaréti Református templom may not be a pristine example of Bauhaus architecture, or even boast historical landmark status. But within its walls resides a spirit of perseverance, a community bound by faith.
