Ever seen a concrete UFO? The Restaurante Panorâmico de Monsanto is exactly that. Perched atop Monsanto Hill it offers breathtaking views. This isn’t your typical Lisbon restaurant.

The Restaurante Panorâmico de Monsanto has quite a story. Designed in the 1930s by Francisco Keil do Amaral it wasn’t built until much later. Disagreements with the city led to another architect Chaves Costa taking over in 1961. Construction began in 1964 and finished in 1967. It finally opened as a restaurant in 1970.

In its heyday it was Lisbon’s ‘pearl’ a hotspot for the city’s elite. It wasn’t always a restaurant though. Over the years it transformed. It became a film production office a bingo hall a nightclub and even a storage space. By 2001 it was abandoned. Urban explorers and graffiti artists quickly claimed it as their own.

But the city didn’t let it decay completely. In 2017 it reopened. Now a safe urban art destination it retains its unique atmosphere. Five floors of graffiti art contrast with original features. Ceramic panels by Manuela Madureira depict old Lisbon. A granite sculpture by Maria Teresa Quirino da Fonseca adds another layer of history. The building’s concrete shell remains. It’s a testament to its past life and its current artistic identity.

Sadly the top floor observation deck is closed due to safety concerns. But the remaining levels still provide those stunning 270 degree views. You can see the Ponte 25 de Abril and Almada across the Tagus River. The Panorâmico de Monsanto remains a must-see in Lisbon. A place where history art and incredible views collide. A true Lisbon gem.
