Imagine a flag, its colors speaking of heritage and hope. That is the story of the Embassy of the State of Palestine in Mexico City. It stands as a symbol of a relationship, a bridge between two nations. This embassy represents more than just a building. It embodies a history of solidarity and diplomatic ties.

The Embassy of the State of Palestine marks a key moment in Mexican-Palestinian relations. Though Mexico doesn’t officially recognize Palestine as a state, it has maintained contact with Palestinian representatives since 1975. This embassy is a testament to those enduring connections. In August 1975, President Luis Echeverría met Yasser Arafat. This meeting led to Mexico establishing diplomatic relations with the Palestine Liberation Organization. That same year, the PLO opened an Information Office in Mexico City. This office later became a Special Delegation office in 1995.

The journey to this embassy was gradual. In 2005, Mexico opened a representative office in Ramallah. In 2012, Mexico voted for Palestine to become a non-member observer state at the United Nations. Then, in June 2023, Palestine elevated its Special Delegation office in Mexico to an embassy. The Mexican government acknowledges this change on its website.

Mexico’s relationship with Palestine has seen many milestones. In June 2000, Foreign Minister Rosario Green visited Gaza City and Ramallah. She met with Yasser Arafat. In 2009, Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki visited Mexico. He was the first Palestinian foreign minister to do so. A statue of Yasser Arafat was unveiled in Mexico City in 2011.

The two nations have several agreements. These include a Twinning Agreement between Bethlehem and Monterrey. Also a cooperation agreement exists in the health field. Mexico has also provided financial aid to Palestine. In 2008, Mexico contributed US$50,000 to the World Food Programme. This helped provide food to Palestinians in Gaza. In 2014, Mexico pledged US$1.1 million for Gaza’s reconstruction. Mexico also contributes annually to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.

Trade between Mexico and Palestine is modest. In 2023, it totaled US$1.4 million. Mexico exports motor vehicles and medical instruments to Palestine. Palestine exports metal fittings and electrical components to Mexico. Despite not formally recognizing Palestine as a state, Mexico supports international actions that do so. In October 2024, President Claudia Sheinbaum called for recognition of the State of Palestine.

So, as you stand before the Embassy of the State of Palestine, remember its story. It reflects decades of evolving relations. It is a place of diplomacy. It is a symbol of hope for the Palestinian people. It represents Mexico’s ongoing engagement with Palestine.
