Standing here on North Nina Avenue in Chicago’s Norwood Park neighborhood, you might be wondering how in the world a church could be established…at a train station? Welcome to the fascinating story of Norwood Park Presbyterian Church! What began as a place of worship in the old Norwood Park Metra Station, has had a fascinating journey that still continues today. The church originally opened its doors in 2009 and was a vibrant part of this community for years to come. In its time at the train station, the congregation was known as Friendship Presbyterian Church, a name that reflects the close-knit community they created in the community. This space was not just a place for worship but was a hub for local events which brought people together, creating a sense of belonging. Concerts, community meetings, and even a “God Talk on Tap” in nearby bars were hosted here. However, change was on the horizon.

In 2018, Norwood Park Presbyterian Church sadly had to leave its home in the train station, making a move to the Gift Theatre in Jefferson Park. During this time, they were heavily involved in a project promoting affordable housing. Eventually, they landed in their present building in 2022. It was a long road with many hurdles, but it has proven to be a great move. Now, they are not only a place of worship, but a vibrant community center that truly emphasizes love, acceptance, and inclusivity. Today, Friendship Presbyterian Church, now simply known as Norwood Park Presbyterian Church, remains a testament to the power of community, perseverance, and the heart of a church that is committed to serving the people of Norwood Park.
