Once upon a time art became community. The Ugnayan sa Poblacion Mural stands before us a testament to the power of art. It shows the spirit of collaboration. It shows the vibrant heart of Poblacion Makati.
Ugnayan sa Poblacion translates to “connection in Poblacion.” This mural is more than paint on a wall. It represents a unique art residency program. This program ran in October and November 2017. It celebrated 70 years of diplomatic relations between France and the Philippines.
The story of Ugnayan sa Poblacion began with Taverne Gutenberg. This art center is based in Lyon France. It was founded by French-Filipina designer Maïa d’Aboville. Her husband French artist Henry Lamy joined her. They aimed to bring communities together. They used creativity. They made art accessible to the less-privileged.
Four international artists journeyed from Lyon to Manila. They included Henry Lamy, Chufy from Switzerland, Abdoul Seck from Senegal, and Alexandre Beretta from France/Ireland. Z Hostel a landmark in Poblacion provided accommodation and workspace. The Ruins became an art space.
These artists engaged with local organizations. They worked with street children from NGOs. Virlanie, Project Pearls, and Stairway Foundation participated. ACAY and others joined too. The goal was simple to inspire through art.
Ugnayan sa Poblacion hosted free art workshops. Over 200 street children participated. Artists created monumental outdoor murals. They held exhibits. They worked in public spaces. The project aimed to reinforce ties between France and the Philippines.
The Ugnayan sa Poblacion documentary captured the essence of this program. Simon Dubreucq a French film director collaborated with Sine de Oro a Filipino media company. This documentary was released around May 2018. It shares the story of art and community.
Several Filipino artists became project ambassadors. Agnes Arellano a sculptor and Billy Bonnevie an artist and musician supported the project. Olivia d’Aboville a designer and sculptor also participated. They each brought unique talents.
Leeroy New Gus Albor and Ramon Orlina also participated. Emmanuel Cordova and Dee Jae Pa’este joined them. Anina Rubio completed the group.
The French Embassy supported Taverne Gutenberg. They recognized the program’s commitment. They supported the empowerment of Filipino youth. Ugnayan sa Poblacion promoted solidarity. It made art accessible to all.
Today the Ugnayan sa Poblacion Mural stands as a reminder. It reminds us of the power of art. It reminds us of community. It shows the beauty that can arise. It happens when cultures connect. It happens when creativity flourishes. It makes a lasting impact. It inspires future generations.
