Amidst the bustling energy of Buenos Aires, Puerto Nuevo stands as a testament to Argentina’s maritime heritage. Puerto Nuevo, also known as the New Port, isn’t just a harbor; it’s a story etched in steel and concrete, a tale of ambition and expansion. Puerto Nuevo officially opened in 1928. It quickly became the largest port in Latin America and the Southern Hemisphere.

Puerto Nuevo’s story begins in the late 19th century, when the existing port, Puerto Madero, struggled to keep up with Argentina’s booming trade. The nation’s exports, primarily cereals and livestock, demanded a more modern and efficient gateway to the world. The solution? A new port, north of Puerto Madero, designed with an innovative “toothed” layout of open docks. Construction on Puerto Nuevo began in 1911, led by the British firm C.H. Walker & Co. World War I disrupted progress, delaying the project for years. The port finally opened in stages, with the last dock becoming operational in 1928. Even then, the work wasn’t finished. Infill of the surrounding area continued for decades, shaping the landscape we see today.

Puerto Nuevo boasts six docks, each serving a specific purpose. Dock A welcomes passenger ships and cargo liners. Docks B and C handle general cargo and refrigerated goods, their skyline punctuated by the towering grain elevators of the National Grain Board. Dock D is equipped for container traffic and heavy loads, while Dock E serves coal ships, tankers, and vessels carrying perishable goods. The smallest, Dock F, accommodates river traffic from the Paraná and Uruguay rivers.

Beyond the docks, Puerto Nuevo’s vast expanse provided a prime location for government buildings. The first to rise were the power plants of CHADE and CIAE in the 1930s. They were followed by grand structures like the State Railways headquarters, the new Mint, the Postal Service building, and the National Highway Administration. Over time, buildings for the armed forces and security services joined them, creating a diverse mix of architecture and purpose within the port district.

Puerto Nuevo remains a vital part of Buenos Aires, a working port that continues to shape the city’s identity. Its story, one of growth, innovation, and adaptation, echoes the spirit of Argentina itself.
