The Galata Mevlevi House Museum isn’t just a building. It is a testament to a unique spiritual tradition. Founded in 1491 it was Istanbul’s first Mevlevi house. For centuries dervishes lived prayed and whirled here seeking union with God.

Imagine this place in 1925. The lodge ceased to be a tekke. It briefly became a school. Then in 1975 it opened as a museum. After major refurbishment between 2005 and 2009 it became the Galata Mevlevi Lodge Museum. It now shares the Mevlevi Sufi Islam sect.

Inside the Galata Dervish House Museum you will find the semahane. This is where the dervishes perform their mesmerizing whirling dances. The sema is no mere performance. It is a spiritual journey. Dervishes turn toward the truth of God uniting heart mind emotion and body.

The Galata Mevlevi House Museum is more than a museum. It is a cultural center. It is one of the few places to witness the sema. The building has gilded woodwork and a painted ceiling. This creates a mesmerizing atmosphere.

The Galata Mevlevi House Museum also houses tombs. Sheikh Galip is buried here. Ismail Ankaravi is here too. Halet Efendi rests here as well. These tombs remind us of the individuals who shaped this spiritual tradition.

The Galata Mevlevi Lodge is on Galipdede Caddesi. This is also known as Music Street. The street runs from Tünel to the Karaköy tram stop. The peaceful cemetery offers a break from the city.
