Gazing up at this towering form, one might wonder, what secrets does the Memento Maris hold? Here, at the Elbinger Platz in Bremerhaven, stands a testament to the city’s maritime soul. The Memento Maris sculpture, a 15-meter-high creation of concrete and steel, dominates the landscape. It was unveiled on July 26, 1968. Its birth was not without controversy. A local group, “Unser schönes Bremerhaven” (Our beautiful Bremerhaven), initiated a competition in the 1960s. They wanted a sculpture to represent the city’s connection to the sea. Gerhart Schreiter’s winning design, nicknamed “Das Ding” (The Thing), sparked heated debate. The local newspaper, Nordsee-Zeitung, was filled with passionate letters from residents. The Memento Maris rises from a base of interconnected cubes. A slender column stretches skyward, culminating in a bulky head. Cross-shaped protrusions point in all directions, resembling abstract ship parts. The inscription “Memento Maris,” Latin for “Remember the Sea,” serves as a reminder. It urges us to remember the ships, the harbors, the shipyards. Most importantly, it honors the people who work there. Three mast-like rods top the sculpture. They sway gently in the wind, adorned with metallic rectangles. These elements bring to mind pennants, sails, or even radar antennae. Originally a stark and architectural design, the Memento Maris surprises. Intuitive touches soften its severity. The interplay of light and shadow reveals its complexity. Round and angular shapes, small and massive forms, straight and oblique angles. All coexist in dynamic tension. This sculpture is more than just concrete and steel. It embodies the spirit of Bremerhaven, a city forever linked to the sea.
