Were these rolling hills once farmlands? East Pilton, a residential haven in North Edinburgh, didn’t always boast rows of houses. Until the 1920s, these lands lay tranquil, dedicated to agriculture. The Wheatley Housing Act of 1924, a landmark achievement of the first Labour Government, sparked a transformation. The act encouraged local authorities to build quality council housing. Edinburgh Corporation heeded the call, commencing construction on the land nestled between Granton Harbour and Davidson’s Mains. By 1940, over 4,000 houses stood proudly in Granton, Wardieburn, and Royston Mains. Plans to further enhance East Pilton with 2,500 additional homes at West Pilton were unfortunately delayed by the outbreak of World War II. While the war raged, private housing for rent began to sprout in East Pilton and Drylaw, courtesy of Gumleys. This marked the beginning of East Pilton’s journey from peaceful farmland to a thriving residential community.
