He designed the Mansion House for the Lord Mayor of London. Young George followed in his father’s footsteps. He embarked on a Grand Tour. He spent six years in Rome studying classical architecture. He returned to London in 1765. He joined his father’s architectural practice. His father died in 1768. George the Younger became the City’s chief architect and surveyor. A monumental task. He designed and built several significant structures. Newgate Prison was one of his most famous designs. A massive building embodying the drama of justice. It was sadly destroyed in the early 20th century. Another iconic work was his contribution to the Guildhall. His design brought a new facade. He incorporated elements inspired by Indian architecture. He also designed several town planning schemes. Few of them were realized. His plans for Finsbury Circus and St George’s Circus still influence London’s shape. He was a founder member of the Royal Academy. He even served as Professor of Architecture. He never gave a single lecture though. He was a prolific artist. He created many pencil portraits of his contemporaries. His portraits were engraved and published. George Dance the Younger married Mary Gurnell. They had three sons. Sadly Mary died young. George Dance the Younger died at this very address on January 14 1825. He left behind a legacy of stunning buildings. Many are gone but his influence lives on.
