What secrets lie hidden beneath layers of time? Right here, in front of the Silver Spur Saloon Plaque, we unravel a tale of transformation. The Silver Spur Saloon Plaque isn’t just a marker; it’s a portal to Roanoke’s vibrant past. Erected in 2009, it commemorates a building that has housed a saloon, a brothel, a justice of the peace, a grocery store, a café, a mechanic’s garage, a hardware store, a doctor’s office, and even the city’s telephone switchboard operator. Imagine the echoes of laughter, disputes, and commerce that once resonated within these walls.

The Silver Spur Saloon, built in 1886, originally served a much more scandalous purpose. A local ordinance during those times required separate entrances for different businesses. This forced patrons to access the brothel, rumored to be on the second floor, via an outdoor staircase. The saloon, however, only operated for about 10 to 15 years. Despite numerous closures and periods of abandonment, the building always found new life, reflecting the resilience of this town.

In 2004, the building embarked on its final transformation. John and Linda Moore donated it to the city, leading to its restoration and the establishment of the Roanoke Visitor Center and Museum. The Silver Spur Saloon Plaque stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Roanoke. It reminds us that every brick, every stone holds stories waiting to be discovered.
