“A church with eight sides you say?” The Iglesia Católica Cristo Luz del Mundo stands before us. Its unusual shape immediately catches the eye. This isn’t your typical church.
The Iglesia Católica Cristo Luz del Mundo isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the unique blend of cultures in Ecuador. Specifically it reflects the Tsa’chila people’s deep-rooted traditions. Located in the Comite del Pueblo sector it has a special significance for the Tsa’chila community.
Built about 30 years ago it was inspired by Abraham Calazacón. He was the first governor of the Tsa’chila nationality. He played a key role in bringing the Catholic Church to his people. The church’s design is a striking example of cultural fusion. Its exterior showcases vibrant colours and traditional Tsa’chila attire. The interior walls depict significant religious figures. These figures wear traditional Tsa’chila clothing. Images of Jesus and the Virgin Mary wear the distinctive Tsa’chila skirts and headdresses. Even the crucifix is unique. Instead of a standard tunic Jesus wears the manpe tsanpa a striped Tsa’chila skirt.
Seven iron windows grace the structure. Their placement is symbolic. The light shining through them highlights the names of the seven Tsa’chila communities. These communities are Chigcilpe Colorados del Búa Cóngoma Otongo Mapalí Los Naranjos Peripa and El Poste. Each window represents one of these communities. They represent the order in which these communities were established.
The Iglesia Católica Cristo Luz del Mundo isn’t merely a building. It’s a living testament to faith. It’s a symbol of the enduring connection between indigenous traditions and the Catholic Church. It shows how these two vastly different cultures can coexist. The church symbolizes the resilience and rebirth of the Tsa’chila people. Their story is interwoven with the very fabric of this extraordinary building.
This isn’t just a church. It’s a vibrant story etched in stone and light. A story of faith resilience and cultural harmony. A story that the Iglesia Católica Cristo Luz del Mundo tells to all who visit.
