Founded in 1911 by Dame Henrietta Barnett the Henrietta Barnett School stands proudly. It’s a testament to her vision. She believed girls deserved equal educational opportunities regardless of their background. In her time this was revolutionary. Hampstead Garden Suburb was developing. It was intended for poorer families. Dame Henrietta wanted to educate girls based on their abilities not their finances.
The school wasn’t always called the Henrietta Barnett School. It began as ‘The Institute’. It was designed to occupy the northeast side of Central Square. Sir Edwin Lutyens masterminded the area’s design. The north wing opened in 1911. The south wing followed in 1923 thanks to architect John Soutar. Lutyens designed the central block Crewe Hall. Initially it hosted concerts classes and debates. It only became the Henrietta Barnett School for Girls in the 1930s. The building itself is a Grade II* Listed Building.
Over the years the school has thrived. It consistently ranks among the top state schools in the UK. In 2016 The Telegraph called it the best performing state school nationally. Its GCSE and A-level results were exceptional. The school boasted outstanding music and English departments. It even received specialist status. It continues to excel even after gaining academy status in 2012.
Throughout its history the Henrietta Barnett School underwent many changes and improvements. A new multi-gym opened in 2007. The science wing was completely refurbished in 2009. Eight modern labs were created. Sports facilities were upgraded with a new MUGA area. A major building project in 2011 resulted in new blocks for music drama design technology and art. Two computer rooms and a café were also added. This cost over 9 million pounds. A new 350000 pound library opened in 2015.
The Henrietta Barnett School has educated many notable women. These include politicians actors athletes writers and philosophers. Its legacy continues to inspire future generations.
