A grand dame graces Park Street. This is the Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School Moonee Ponds Campus. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place where the echoes of young ladies’ laughter still dance in the air. Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School boasts a rich history, woven from the threads of two distinct institutions. Let’s unravel this captivating story together, right here at the Moonee Ponds Campus.

Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School’s Moonee Ponds Campus, originally known as Penleigh Ladies’ College, opened its doors in 1871 as Dorset House, Mrs. Tulloch’s School for Young Ladies. It saw several locations in the Moonee Ponds area before settling at 83 Park Street in 1921. The Limerock sisters, Lilian, Elma, and Elizabeth, shaped the school’s growth and ethos, leaving an indelible mark on its history. Following World War II, the Presbyterian Church acquired Penleigh, paving the way for its eventual union with Essendon Grammar School.

The tale of Essendon Grammar School is equally fascinating. Its roots trace back to Carlton College, founded in 1872. Carlton College merged with St Thomas’ Grammar in 1910 and relocated to Essendon. Another school, Northern Grammar School, briefly operated in Moonee Ponds before settling on the present Essendon campus in 1924. The official amalgamation, creating Essendon Grammar School, occurred in 1934. Essendon Grammar’s affiliation with the Presbyterian Church began in 1948. The senior school found its home in Keilor East in 1960, thanks to a land purchase in 1956 and an inauguration by none other than Prime Minister Robert Menzies.

In 1952, the paths of Penleigh Ladies’ College and Essendon Grammar School began to intertwine. Shared classes for Intermediate and Leaving students marked the first step towards a deeper connection. By 1969, the councils of both schools envisioned a fully integrated senior level. This vision materialized in 1973 with the co-educational McNab House in Keilor East. The full amalgamation, birthing Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School, finally occurred in 1977. The newly formed school aligned with the Uniting Church upon its establishment that same year.

Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School’s Moonee Ponds Campus stands as a testament to the enduring power of education and the rich history of two Melbourne institutions.
