In 1957, a visionary priest, Father Arthur Julien, embarked on a mission. He sought to empower underprivileged Chinese students in Penang with education. This marked the humble beginnings of Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Heng Ee. Initially, Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Heng Ee operated from borrowed classrooms at Convent Primary School. The school was a private institution dedicated to helping destitute and older Chinese students gain a formal education. The Catholic Church purchased land in 1961. This six-acre plot, situated between Hamilton Road and Free School Road, was destined to become the permanent home of Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Heng Ee. Construction began after obtaining a permit from the Ministry of Education in 1966. The first building, a four-story structure now known as Block A, was completed in 1967. With 17 classrooms and offices, it welcomed students from the temporary classrooms at Heng Ee Primary School. In that same year, Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Heng Ee received government funding. It transitioned into a national-type secondary school, officially becoming SMJK Heng Ee. Expansion continued with Block B in 1969, housing science labs and an art room. Block C followed in 1970, connecting the first two blocks and providing space for the library and administrative offices. By 1972, the student population had grown significantly to 1,228 students, spanning from Remove Form to Form Five. A new hall, Block D, was added in 1975. As the school flourished, Block E was built in 1987, offering specialized rooms for carpentry, cooking, sewing, and electronics. Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Heng Ee transitioned to a co-educational institution in 1991. Further expansions included an additional floor on Block E in 1999 and the construction of the impressive eight-story Bangunan Wawasan (Block F) in 2011. This modern building boasts a library, multi-purpose halls, lecture theaters, and even a rooftop astronomical observatory. Throughout its history, Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Heng Ee has achieved numerous academic and extracurricular accolades, a testament to the dedication of its founder and the commitment of its students and staff.
