Hotel d’Hallwyll. This unassuming building in Le Marais holds a secret. It’s the last remaining private house designed by Claude Nicolas Ledoux. Ledoux a revolutionary architect. He transformed an older house for the wife of the Comte d’Hallwyll.

The renovation was extensive. It included stables for eighteen horses. The beautiful garden was another feature. Imagine the elegant parties held here. This was a house of Parisian high society.

The Neoclassical facades were modern for their time. This was surprising. Ledoux never studied in Rome. His designs were based on his knowledge of Palladio and Piranesi. He developed a unique style. He used simple geometric motifs. Circles squares and triangles were prominent.

The interiors have mostly been lost to time. The staircase is original. It was recently renovated. The ancient limestone floors remain. They tell silent stories of past inhabitants. The Greek key pattern on the gates is a beautiful detail.

The street facade features stone rustication. This was unusual for its time. Extensive stone rustication was usually found on prisons or banks. The rustication is different above the second floor windows. This was a change made during construction. It lowered the roof height.

The rear garden was Ledoux’s greatest innovation. It was surrounded by a Doric colonnade. This made the house appear much larger than it actually is. A faux colonnade was even painted on a neighboring building. This extended the garden’s perspective. The garden now has doors opening onto the street.

Today Hotel d’Hallwyll holds twelve apartments. It’s a private residence. Yet it stands as a testament to Ledoux’s genius. A hidden gem in the heart of Paris. A glimpse into the past. A legacy of innovation. A reminder of Ledoux’s enduring impact on architecture.
