Picture this. You stand before the First United Methodist Church in Austin. Its Neo-Classical architecture speaks of enduring faith. This isn’t just any church. It’s a cornerstone of Austin’s history.

Founded in 1840 the First United Methodist Church started small. Just 14 members. They met in temporary locations. This included the Republic of Texas Capitol building. Imagine worshipping in such a historical setting.

In 1847 they built their first proper church. A wooden structure on Congress Avenue and 4th Street. This wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a community hub. Doctors even met there in 1853 forming the Texas Medical Association. A fascinating blend of faith and medicine.

They outgrew that building. In 1854 a new brick church rose at Brazos and 10th Street. More growth followed. In 1884 a larger building was constructed on that same site. For a time it was known as Tenth Street Methodist Church.

Then came the move to the present location. In 1921 the congregation bought the land. They built this impressive Neo-Classical structure we see today. Pastors like Dr Edward R Barcus Dr W F Bryan Dr Marvin S Vance and Dr Robert S Tate Jr played key roles in its creation.

The First United Methodist Church of Austin. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to faith community and Austin’s enduring spirit. It’s a place where progressive theology blends with traditional worship. A church for all of Austin. A church with a rich history. A history that continues to unfold.
