Why is Filuren so special? This theater began as Bodil Lindorff’s children’s theater school in 1966. She was a pedagogue, actress, and instructor. Lindorff wanted learning about theater to be part of children’s education. It was primarily a school to learn about theater, not just how to act. Children practiced listening and focusing here.
Filuren evolved into something much bigger. It became a vital cultural institution in Aarhus. In 1970, Lindorff opened a children’s theater connected to the school. It was located at Vestergade 3. This was Aarhus’ first permanent children’s theater. Children from the theater school and a few adult actors performed together.
Originally called Børneteatret Filuren, it became an independent institution in 1972. Filuren’s actors performed at Vestergade. They also toured schools and libraries, spreading theater joy.
By 1974, Filuren became a professional children’s theater. It adapted well-known stories, classics, and myths for children. The goal was always to create productions suitable for all age groups. Parents should also find it exciting to go to the theater together.
In 1992, Filuren moved to Musikhuset. It grew from a theater into a theater house. Now, it offers programs for children and young people up to 18 years old.
Today, Teaterhuset Filuren also runs the “Kulturskolen for teater og dans”. This is a culture school for theater and dance. They also have a competence center. It develops activities that connect theater education and performing arts with school learning.
Now, Filuren resides in Musikhuset Aarhus. It has a theater hall seating 150 people. Teaterhuset Filuren is a self-governing institution. Besides professional theater productions, it offers drama activities for schools. Filuren also runs a culture school for theater and dance. More than 600 children participate each season. Talented older students can join SGK. This is a basic course in performing arts. Young people develop their talent while studying.
So, when you see Filuren, remember its rich history. From a small theater school to a major cultural hub. It continues to inspire and educate young people in Aarhus. Filuren is not just a theater. It is a place where imaginations come to life.
