The names etched in stone whisper tales of sacrifice. This is the Woodford War Memorial. It stands proudly a testament to the villagers who gave their lives in the Great War and the Second World War. More than just a monument it’s a living history book.

The Woodford War Memorial isn’t one but two memorials. A unique situation for such a small village. The initial design a crucifix faced objections from the nonconformist population. This led to the formation of a group called the Comrades Club. They raised funds and petitioned the Parish Council for their own memorial. The result is this beautiful structure on the Village Green.

Dedicated and unveiled on July 10 1921 the unveiling was a significant event. Large crowds attended including relatives and former colleagues of the fallen soldiers. The annual Feast Fair even relocated to accommodate the ceremony. The Rev Davidson along with ministers from the Baptist Wesleyan and the Chaplain to the Forces led the service. The Kettering Rifle Band played and the Woodford Male Voice Choir sang.

The names listed on the memorial tell individual stories. Walter F G Ainge Arthur L Allen Leonard Allen and many others are remembered. Each name represents a life cut short a family’s grief a community’s loss. After the Second World War eight more names were added to honour those who died in that conflict.

Even the construction of the memorial is a story in itself. A faded photograph shows the steps already in place and scaffolding lifting the heavy stone monolith into position. The details of each fallen soldier can be found in the village archives a treasure trove for anyone interested in uncovering Woodford’s past. The memorial stands as a poignant reminder that peace has a price. A price paid by these brave individuals. Let’s take a moment to remember their sacrifice. Let their names resonate in our hearts. The Woodford War Memorial is more than just stone. It’s a symbol of remembrance and resilience.
