Gazing upon San Marcos Evangelista, one can almost hear the echoes of ancient traditions. This chapel, nestled in the heart of Mexico City’s Barrio San Marcos Ixquitlán, holds centuries of stories within its walls. San Marcos Evangelista isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the rich history of a neighborhood that predates the Spanish colonial era. Originally known as Ixquitlán, meaning “Place of Esquites” or perhaps “Place of Izquitecatl”, this area was once a vibrant settlement. The original church, built between the 17th and 18th centuries, witnessed the transformation of this small neighborhood. San Marcos Evangelista underwent significant reconstruction between 1975 and 1978. Two new towers and the current façade were added, giving the chapel a renewed grandeur. The original tower still stands, a silent observer of the passage of time. The chapel’s rectangular atrium embraces the colonial-style façade. The semicircular arch of the main entry, framed by stone-carved pilasters and a cross-shaped oculo-window, welcomes visitors. Inside San Marcos Evangelista, a single nave stretches towards the altar. Extensive plasterwork adorns the flat ceilings. Angels grace the triumphal arch with their painted presence. The simple altar displays images of San Marcos, the Immaculate Conception, and the Crucified Christ. San Marcos Evangelista, a beacon of faith and history, continues to serve the community of Barrio San Marcos Ixquitlán. Its story is interwoven with the neighborhood’s evolution. It stands as a reminder of the enduring spirit of this unique corner of Mexico City.
