Right here, in the heart of Chicago’s Loop, stands St. Peter’s Church, a beacon of faith amidst the city’s bustling concrete canyons. The building, erected in 1953, is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Franciscan Friars who call it home. This church is known as ‘St. Peter’s (In the Loop)’ and is a true architectural gem. The facade, clad in Georgia pink marble, features an imposing crucifix, a poignant sculpture of Christ on the Cross. It was designed by Latvian sculptor Arvid Strauss and executed by J. Watts. His art, as towering and imposing as the skyscrapers that surround this church, has been called “Christ of the Loop.” It is a masterpiece, an embodiment of hope and resilience. But there’s even more to this church than meets the eye. As you step inside, the grand interior awaits. You’ll see lovely peach granite that matches the holy water font, which sits in the center of the aisle, a granite centerpiece. This is a church with a history dating back to 1846. It holds several masses each day, and is known as a sanctuary for people of all backgrounds. The Franciscan friars who live above the church sometimes perform as the choir during mass. The church boasts a magnificent organ and an arched stained glass window, the only one in the church. Look closely to see the beautiful panels with sculptures depicting the life of St. Francis of Assisi, these sculptures with metal frames, some of them brass, are beautifully illuminated and bring light into the church . A visit to St. Peter’s Church will leave you feeling both humbled and inspired.
