In 1963, the Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph established Seton Academy in South Holland, Illinois. Originally called Elizabeth Seton High School, Seton Academy honored the first American-born saint. The school stood on four cornerstones: Faith, Leadership, Scholarship, and Community. Seton Academy initially served as an all-girls school. In 2003, it transitioned to a coeducational institution. Sadly, Seton Academy closed its doors in 2016. The Archdiocese of Chicago cited declining enrollment and rising operational costs as the reasons for closure. During its time, Seton Academy offered a range of athletic programs. These included boys and girls cross country, basketball, and track and field, along with cheerleading, baseball, softball, and football. The school also had a vibrant student life, evident in its newspaper, “The Buzz,” and yearbook, “Embers.” Seton Academy boasted notable alumni like D.J. Cooper, a basketball player in the Israeli Basketball Premier League, and Javon Freeman-Liberty, who played for the Toronto Raptors. The school’s tuition in the 2008-2009 school year was $8,150, with an additional $200 in fees. Even in its closure, Seton Academy’s legacy as a Catholic college-preparatory high school remains in South Holland.
