Was it a father and son who built this? The Baba-Oğul Çeşmesi stands before you a testament to history. This isn’t just any fountain. It’s a small corner fountain in Kadıköy Istanbul. It stands proudly on Acıbadem Caddesi in Acıbadem Mahallesi. Harem Ağası Tayfur Ağa and his spiritual son Besim Ağa commissioned its construction. This was sometime between 1844 and 1845. The Baba-Oğul Çeşmesi is unique. It’s one of the few single-faced corner fountains remaining in Kadıköy. Made from Kufeski stone its basin and frame are marble. Notice the pilasters on either side of the front. Above them you’ll see sun motifs. These are elegant carvings. A medallion once held a tughra a royal emblem. Sadly it’s been erased over time. The passage of time leaves its mark.
In the late 1980s the fountain moved. It was relocated across the street from its original site. This wasn’t a small undertaking. It shows the fountain’s enduring significance. A restoration project by the Kadıköy Municipality revitalized the Baba-Oğul Çeşmesi in 2007. This careful work ensured its beauty remains.
