“Another match today?” a young boy asks his dad, his eyes wide with anticipation as they approach Freyberg Field. This multi-purpose stadium, also known as Kiwitea Street, stands as a testament to Auckland’s vibrant football culture. It is located in the suburb of Sandringham. Freyberg Field is more than just a sports ground. It’s a community hub, a place where memories are made and local sporting dreams begin.

The story of Freyberg Field begins in 1965. Central United needed a permanent home. Before that, they played at the Auckland Domain and Oakley Ground. The City of Auckland made this spot on Kiwitea Street available. There was just one catch. It was only forty-five metres wide.

For over twenty years, Central United worked hard to improve the pitch. Club members even paid for it themselves. They widened the pitch three times. In the late 1980s, they bought land, built a timber wall, and removed 5,000 cubic metres of earth.

But in 1992, the field was in bad shape. Only six games could be played here. The Auckland City Council and the New Zealand Turf Culture Institute stepped in. Together, they created a plan for an all-weather, sand-carpeted pitch, similar to Eden Park and the MCG. By 1995, Freyberg Field had a brand new surface.

The improvements did not stop there. In 2004, a covered grandstand was built. The clubrooms were expanded between 2004 and 2007. They added a boardroom, office, corporate hospitality wing, and medical room. In 2007, the pitch was sand-slitted, sand-carpeted, and resurfaced.

Today, Freyberg Field can hold 5,000 fans. Terraced seating accommodates 250 people. It is the home of Auckland City FC and Central United. Both teams have called this ground home since 2004 and 1965 respectively. In football circles, the football ground at Freyberg Field is simply known as Kiwitea St.

Look toward the east stand. That is the David Vlatkovich Stand. It is named after a former Central United player and club member. Freyberg Field hosted the 2007 Chatham Cup final.

But Freyberg Field offers more than just football. On the other side of Kiwitea Street is the Central Cavaliers Bowling Club. They offer lawn bowls, table tennis, pool, and darts. They even hire out their club rooms for events.

Whether you are here for a football match or a relaxing game of bowls, Freyberg Field welcomes you. Take a moment to appreciate the history and community spirit of this special place. It is a ground where local sporting legends have been made. It is also named for Bernard Freyberg, 1st Baron Freyberg. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a premier sports venue, Freyberg Field embodies the heart of Auckland sport.
