Lost in the Parisian labyrinth? Then allow me to guide you to a hidden gem a place steeped in mystery and forgotten tales. We stand before Rue des Deux-Ermites. Its very name whispers secrets.

Rue des Deux-Ermites meaning Street of the Two Hermits is a street that no longer exists. It once existed on the Île de la Cité in Paris. Its story unfolds like a thrilling novel. A novel with twists turns and a shocking climax. A novel where fact and legend intertwine.

Originally called Cour Ferri de Paris in 1220 its name changed throughout the centuries. It was Rue de la Confrerie-Notre-Dame in 1300. Then Rue de l’Armite Rue des Hermites or Rue de l’Hermite. In 1640 it became Rue des Deux-Serviteurs. The current name Rue des Deux-Ermites suggests two hermits once lived there. Perhaps in the quiet solitude of this narrow street.

This mysterious street held more than hermitages. It was the scene of a gruesome tale a legend passed down through generations. A barber notorious for his dual skills. He used both razor and lancet. He was known to practice surgery but there was something much more sinister about his trade. One day a stranger visited his shop for a shave. But no one saw him leave. His worried friend began a frantic search accompanied by the stranger’s faithful dog. The dog tracked its master to the barber’s shop. He sniffed out a hidden trapdoor. Beneath it lay a gruesome secret. The stranger’s body cut into pieces. The barber was revealed as a murderer. He had been supplying human flesh to a neighboring pastry chef. Both were punished severely.

Rue des Deux-Ermites was eventually shortened by the creation of Rue Constantine. Then it disappeared completely during the reconstruction of the Hotel-Dieu. It was a narrow street. Only three or four houses remained during its existence. Yet even in its brevity. Its story echoes down the ages. A story of piety crime and a persistent dog. A reminder that even the smallest alleys in Paris conceal histories that can both thrill and chill. The Rue des Deux-Ermites may be gone. But its intriguing past remains. A haunting legend woven into the very fabric of Paris.
