The story of the Mehmed Akif Camii begins in the 1960s. A wave of Turkish immigrants came to Munich to work mainly for BMW. These Muslim workers sought a place to practice their faith. They started holding prayers together. By 1972 they found space in BMW housing. The Motorstrasse 61 became their first mosque.

Then in 1984 the Turkish-Islamic Union of Religious Affairs DITIB was founded. The Turkish-Islamic Union of Religious Affairs DITIB took over the imam responsibilities. Trained imams from Turkey replaced the volunteer leaders. A significant milestone arrived on December 15 2000. With the support of DITIB and many generous Muslims the building at Moosacher Strasse 22 was purchased. It was transformed into the magnificent mosque we see today.

The mosque is named after Mehmet Akif Ersoy a prominent Ottoman poet. Born in Istanbul in 1837 he was a multilingual scholar. He mastered Turkish Arabic Persian French and Albanian. His powerful poetry inspired many. He is most famous for writing the Turkish national anthem. He passed away in 1936 at the age of 99.
