Did Arany Dániel ever imagine his name would grace a plaque on Korong Street? Here at number 6, the Arany Dániel Plaque commemorates this remarkable mathematician and teacher. The plaque, a gleaming marble testament, stands as a tribute to his enduring contributions to mathematics. Arany Dániel, born Arany Dávid in Pest in 1863, dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge. He founded the Középiskolai Matematikai Lapok, a journal crucial for aspiring mathematicians. He taught at the Selmec forestry academy and later in Győr. The plaque’s inscription tells us, “In this house lived ARANY DÁNIEL (1863-1945), mathematician, teacher, and founder of the Középiskolai Matematikai és Fizikai Lapok.” It also notes that the Zugló local government erected the plaque in 2016. Arany Dániel’s legacy extends beyond the plaque. The prestigious Arany Dániel Mathematical Competition, held annually for 9th and 10th graders, continues to inspire young mathematicians. Tragically, Arany Dániel and his wife perished during the siege of Budapest in 1944. His valuable mathematical library, bequeathed to the Eötvös Loránd Mathematical and Physical Society, survived.
