Remember Benskins Brewery? That’s where our story at Watford Stadium begins. This stadium has been Watford Football Club’s home since 1922. It’s more than just a sports venue. It is filled with history and passion.
Watford FC previously played at a ground on Cassio Road for 23 years. The move to Vicarage Road marked a new era. The stadium officially opened on August 30 1922. The opponents were Millwall.

In January 2002, Watford purchased the stadium’s freehold from Benskins. Financial difficulties forced them to sell and lease it back later that year. A campaign called “Let’s Buy Back The Vic” began. Fans and former owner Elton John donated generously. The club repurchased the stadium in September 2004.
The Vicarage Road Stand got rebuilt in 1993. It replaced an open terrace. The Rookery Stand followed in 1995. These developments modernized the stadium.
The Graham Taylor Stand got its name in 2014. It honors Watford’s most successful manager. The Sir Elton John Stand also stands as a tribute. It recognizes his contributions to the club.
Vicarage Road hosted greyhound racing for many years. It ran alongside football until 1978. Imagine the stadium filled with the roar of the crowd and the excitement of the races.
In 1982, Watford Stadium Halt railway station opened. It provided an alternative to Watford High Street and Watford Junction. Elton John and Lord Aberdare officially opened it on December 4 1982. The inaugural train was late bringing Manchester United fans.
