Do you see this monument? It’s the Daughters of the American Revolution World War I Monument. When you look at it, see how the sunlight shines off the light-colored granite? Imagine those men and women from St. Paul and Ramsey County who died in service during World War I. Can you see them marching? They were brave. The inscription reads, “In memory of the men and women of Saint Paul and Ramsey County who sacrificed their lives in the world war. Greater love hath no man than this.” The monument is one of the oldest of its kind in the entire state and was dedicated on November 11, 1923. After Armistice Day, everyone in the area came together to honor the soldiers and families who were impacted by the war. It’s so moving to watch history unfold in front of you. The Daughters of the American Revolution put in tremendous effort to collect funds for the monument. They asked for donations from merchants, families, corporations, and societies. Imagine all the people who contributed to the monument. It was truly a community effort. It stands as a testament to the bravery of the men and women who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. It’s more than an engraved rock – it’s a reminder of the enduring spirit of those who gave their all for their country.
