Standing before Mount Waverley Secondary College, you’re met by a scene that seems to be right out of a movie set. The modern, vibrant buildings, designed with an emphasis on collaboration and innovation, are a far cry from the humble beginnings of this institution. Established in 1964 with just 73 students and six teachers, the school was originally known as Mount Waverley High School. Despite its humble beginnings, the school’s growth and impact are remarkable. It now boasts a robust curriculum with a wide selection of subjects and even offers Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs. The college takes pride in its student leadership programs, highlighted by awards like the Australia’s Team Leadership Award for Students (ATLAS) and the Department of Education and Training SRC of the Year award. The school has also cultivated a thriving arts and sports culture, with a school-wide production every year and a wide range of inter-school sports competitions. The school’s commitment to excellence, however, was severely tested in 2003. A devastating fire destroyed much of the school, causing an estimated $4 million in damage. However, the resilience of the community shone through. Through a collaborative effort, Mount Waverley Secondary College was rebuilt, and the school stands today as a testament to the fortitude of its students, teachers, and community. The college has forged a legacy of academic excellence and offers numerous pathways for student success, whether in athletics, arts, or academics. Though it may not be an institution of sprawling grandeur, Mount Waverley Secondary College is a testament to the power of community and the unwavering pursuit of excellence.
