How did a grand medieval castle vanish into thin air? You might be surprised to know that what lies before you, these seemingly insignificant ruins, were once the mighty Chateau de Retz. Imagine a time when these crumbling stones soared skyward, their imposing presence guarding Paris against English invaders during the Hundred Years’ War. Picture yourself back in the 13th century, standing before the castle in its prime. It was then known as the “Chastel de Roye,” built around 1215 by Barthélémy de Roye, a knight returning victorious from the Battle of Bouvines. This fortress, along with four others, formed a formidable line of defense around Paris, a shield against the ambitions of the English Crown. Sadly, the Chateau de Retz, like many fortresses of its time, succumbed to the ravages of war. In 1346, English forces led by the infamous “Black Prince” laid siege to the castle, ultimately leaving it in ruins. Though later restored, it faced further attacks, its once proud walls echoing with the clashes of armies. Centuries passed, and the once-mighty castle fell into disrepair. Its fate was sealed in the 17th century when King Louis XIV, an avid hunter, ordered its complete demolition. The king found the ruins interfered with his hunting grounds and became a haven for bandits. Today, only fragments of its former glory remain, whispering tales of battles fought and kings entertained. As you stand here, let your imagination rebuild its walls, repopulate its grounds with knights and nobles, and hear the echoes of a time long past within the silent stones of Chateau de Retz.
