Then, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) arrived. Their congregation was outgrowing their rented spaces. They needed a new home. They learned about St Christopher Church and saw potential. They didn’t buy the building outright. Instead, through congregational generosity and outside connections, they secured a mortgage and made a down payment. This was a significant achievement in 2018. The reopening was a joyous surprise for many locals who thought the church was gone for good. Edinburgh Tabernacle doesn’t just serve its congregation. It’s a hub for the whole community. It’s open daily, hosting various groups like kickboxing, music, and dance classes. They’ve provided food parcels, winter jackets, school uniforms, fuel support, and emotional counseling. The building itself is nearly a century old. Its kitchen and toilets are outdated, limiting the church’s potential. The National Churches Trust stepped in with a grant for renovations. This allowed them to focus on improving these vital facilities. Once the kitchen upgrades are complete, they plan to reopen their food bank and expand community outreach. Imagine chefs from the congregation teaching cooking classes, and volunteers training others. Imagine English and IT classes helping people find jobs. Imagine a nursery for single parents.
