Why is a shrine nestled at the foot of Mount Kaya, you ask? Let me tell you the story of Kumano Jinja, the Bear Field Shrine. Kumano Jinja is steeped in local legend. It’s believed to be the dwelling place of the Ubusunagami, the local deity of this area. The shrine reveres Emperor Jinmu, a legendary figure in Japanese history, and his consort, Empress Izanami. Legend has it, this shrine dates back to the reign of Emperor Jinmu. Behind Kumano Jinja, Mount Kaya holds a special place in the shrine’s history. It’s known as Okunomiya, the inner sanctuary of Kumano Jinja. Another name for it is Tateishi Jinja, the Standing Rock Shrine, thanks to a large, imposing rock. As the story goes, the god of war, Jinmu, passed by this very mountain on his eastern expedition. A giant boulder suddenly flew down and landed on the mountainside. Tabikarao-no-okami, a powerful male deity, appeared on the rock. He vanquished an evil demon residing there. That boulder gave rise to the name Tateishi, “standing rock”, and the shrine that sprung up here is Kumano Jinja. Every year on the first Sunday of December, a lively festival takes place at Kumano Jinja. It’s a festival of hope and prosperity. People come to pray for thriving businesses, safety in their homes, and good health. Children add their own special touch to the occasion with charming dances and captivating kagura performances. They bring the spirit of joy and celebration to the heart of Kumano Jinja.
