Right here stands the Dr. KRT Radjiman Wedyodiningrat Building. Who was Dr. Radjiman Wedyodiningrat? What makes this building so significant?

Dr. Kanjeng Raden Tumenggung Radjiman Wedyodiningrat was more than a name. He was a pivotal figure in Indonesia’s fight for independence. Born in Yogyakarta on April 21, 1879, he became a doctor. He was also a key founder of Indonesia.

Radjiman wasn’t just any doctor. He graduated from STOVIA in December 1898. STOVIA was the School tot Opleiding van Indicshe Artsen. This means School for the Education of Indigenous Doctors.

Radjiman’s commitment extended beyond medicine. He joined Boedi Oetomo. This was an early Indonesian nationalist organization. In 1945, he led the Badan Penyelidik Usaha-Usaha Persiapan Kemerdekaan. This translates to the Investigating Body for Preparatory Efforts for Indonesian Independence or BPUPKI.

Consider this: Radjiman shared a birth date with Kartini. Kartini was another iconic figure in Indonesian history. Both were born on April 21, 1879.

On August 9, 1945, a crucial moment occurred. Radjiman accompanied Soekarno and Hatta to Saigon. They met with Field Marshal Hisaichi Terauchi. Terauchi commanded Japan’s Southern Expeditionary Army Group. This meeting followed the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan was planning to surrender. This created a power vacuum in Indonesia.

Radjiman’s early life was marked by compassion. He saw the suffering caused by the plague in Ngawi. He also witnessed the dangers women faced during childbirth. This drove him to study medicine. He wanted to save lives.

His family background is also interesting. His mother had Gorontalo heritage. His uncle, Wahidin Soedirohoesodo, funded his education in Batavia.

Radjiman’s education was quite unique. Initially, he listened to lessons outside the classroom window. He was helping Wahidin Soedirohoesodo’s son. A Dutch teacher took pity on him. He was invited into the classroom. By age 20, he became a doctor. At 24, he earned a Master of Arts degree. He also studied in the Netherlands, France, England, and America.

In 1914-1915, Radjiman chaired Boedi Oetomo. He proposed forming people’s militias across Indonesia. The Dutch responded by creating the Volksraad. Radjiman became a representative in it.

During a BPUPKI session on May 29, 1945, he posed a vital question. He asked, “What should be the basis of the Indonesian state if it becomes independent?” Soekarno answered with Pancasila. Radjiman documented Soekarno’s explanation in a book introduction.

After Indonesia’s independence, Radjiman served in several roles. He was a member of the DPA and KNIP. He also led the first DPR session. This was when Indonesia reunified after being the Republic of the United States of Indonesia.

Radjiman passed away in 1952. He was buried in Yogyakarta. In 2013, he was declared a National Hero of Indonesia. This honor was bestowed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

The Dr. KRT Radjiman Wedyodiningrat Building stands as a tribute. It honors a man of medicine, politics, and unwavering dedication to Indonesia. Remember his question about the nation’s foundation. It shaped the country we see today.
