Today, we are standing on the rue Celestino Alfonso. This quiet street is more than just a side road in the city of Paris – it is a reminder of courage, sacrifice, and the fight for freedom. The rue Celestino Alfonso is named after a Spanish republican who fought against the Nazi regime. In 1916, Celestino Alfonso was born in a small village in Spain. His family later moved to Paris, and he became involved in communist politics. When Franco’s fascist government took control of Spain, Celestino volunteered to fight for the Republican forces. After the Spanish Civil War, he was interned in a French camp for refugees. He later escaped and joined the French Resistance during World War II. As a member of the FTP-MOI, a group of communist resistance fighters, he fought bravely against the Nazi occupation. He was part of a team that killed an important Nazi official, Julius Ritter, the key recruiter for slave labor in occupied France. This act was a blow against the Nazi regime and earned Celestino the name “Spanish Communist” on the infamous “Affiche Rouge,” a propaganda poster used by the Nazis to depict members of the Resistance as criminals. Sadly, Celestino was captured and executed by the Nazis in 1944, along with 21 other members of his group.

Celestino’s heroic actions are a testament to his unwavering commitment to fighting for justice. The street that bears his name is a reminder of his sacrifice and the importance of remembering those who fought for our freedom. While it might seem like just another street in Paris, it is a place imbued with history and a story of resilience. This is the quiet heart of a brave man’s legacy.
