Did the Chanhassen Train Depot always look this quaint? The Chanhassen Train Depot, built in 1882 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad, wasn’t always a picturesque reminder of the past. Originally, it was described as “one of the handsomest and most convenient of any line.” This vital transportation hub spurred the growth of businesses around it. Imagine the hustle and bustle as passengers boarded and disembarked, goods were loaded and unloaded, and the steam engine hissed and chugged, connecting Chanhassen to Minneapolis and the wider world. The Chanhassen Train Depot became the heart of the community. But like many small-town depots, its importance waned with the rise of automobiles. During World War II, the once-essential depot became surplus. Sold for a mere $75 to Joseph and Mary Kerber, the Chanhassen Train Depot was moved to their farm west of Lake Ann Park. There, it served a humbler purpose, transformed into a workshop. Decades passed. Then, as Chanhassen prepared to celebrate its centennial in 1996, the city rediscovered its forgotten treasure. The Chanhassen Housing & Redevelopment Authority purchased the depot. It was carefully moved back to a location near its original site. Local families contributed by purchasing inscribed bricks and pavers, funding the move and the exterior restoration. Today, the Chanhassen Train Depot stands as a testament to the town’s rich history, a tangible link to its past. Although no longer a bustling transportation center, it continues to serve the community. It serves as a reminder of a bygone era, when the railroad was the lifeline of small towns like Chanhassen.
