High above Marseille stands the Vigie de l’Étoile a silent sentinel watching over the landscape. What secrets does this tower hold?

The Vigie de l’Étoile is located in the Massif de l’Étoile. This small mountain range stretches north of Marseille. It covers about 10,000 hectares. The highest point is 779 meters at Grand-Puech. Together with the Garlaban massif it forms a chain of mountains in lower Provence.

The name Montagne de l’Estello translates to Mountain of the Star. Frédéric Mistral believed it came from the range’s orientation. It faces north towards the polar star.

The Massif de l’Étoile offers stunning views. From its heights you can see Marseille the Frioul Islands and the Garlaban massif. Sainte-Baume Sainte-Victoire and the Luberon mountains also appear. On clear days Mont Ventoux and the Southern Alps are visible.

The range features diverse flora and fauna. The north-facing slopes host forests of Aleppo pine green oak and pubescent oak. A more southerly forest houses Scots pine. Unique plant species thrive here including Sabline de Provence and Petite jurinée.

The Massif de l’Étoile is a protected natural space. Only one road crosses it from Mimet to Logis-Neuf. The road is closed to public traffic. Many paths crisscross the area. They are open to hikers and mountain bikers.

The Vigie de l’Étoile not only provides stunning views, but it also contributes to the protection of the Massif de l’Étoile. The tower serves as a lookout. From there forest fire detection is made possible.
