“I wonder what stories this land holds?” That’s what you might ask yourself standing here at Kauri Point Centennial Park. Kauri Point offers stunning views and a glimpse into Auckland’s past. This parkland is a place of natural beauty and historical significance.

Kauri Point Centennial Park is a dog exercise area. It is a great place to bring your four-legged friend. The park has walking tracks and scenic views. The tracks lead down to Kendall Bay.

The walk down to Kendall Bay is steep. The views out over the Waitematā Harbour make the effort worthwhile. Kendall Bay has gently sloping sandy beaches. These beaches are ideal for small children and swimming.

The tracks at Kauri Point Centennial Park are well maintained. Shingled paths lead from Onetaunga Road to Kendall Bay. Seats are placed at strategic viewpoints. Secondary tracks are worth a visit in dry conditions. A pleasant coastal walk connects to the Chelsea Sugar Refinery.

Kauri Point Domain sits next to Kauri Point Centennial Park. It is a large park and reserve on the northwest side of Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour. It lies between Onetaugo Bay and Soldiers Bay, west of Chatswood. A military armaments facility separates it from Kauri Point Centennial Park.

Interestingly, despite its name, Kauri Point Domain has no kauri trees on the main trail. These were cut down long ago. Mature exotic pines now dominate the reserve. Smaller attached parks, Muriel Fisher and Kauri Park, do have kauri. However, the tracks there are closed.

Despite lacking kauri trees, the domain is a popular walking destination. It has several easy, connected tracks. The main walk from the car park on Balmain Road offers superb cliff views. These views are between attractive Kirkpatrick Beach and Soldiers Bay. You can walk down to the beach. It’s perfect for swimming or hanging out.

A side track takes you into the mangroves and salt marsh. This leads towards Island Bay Road on the north side of Soldiers Bay. The bay is unusual. It features a mix of salt marsh, freshwater swamp forest, and a small podocarp forest.

Remember, secondary tracks can be tricky in wet weather. Care is required. This area holds significance for different iwi. Access was often contested in the past.

So, take your time. Enjoy the views. Explore the tracks. Reflect on the history. Kauri Point offers a memorable experience. It connects you with nature and Auckland’s heritage.
