A whisper of history echoes across the waves. This is the Île d’Endoume. Just imagine the scene before you. Two small islands barely 300 meters from the shore. The larger one Île Degaby dominates the smaller Île Daume. Together they make up the Endoume archipelago a jewel in the heart of Marseille’s breathtaking coastline.

The Île d’Endoume has a fascinating past. Fortified in 1703 as Fort de Tourville it played a vital role in protecting Marseille. Named after the famed vice-admiral Anne Hilarion de Costentin Comte de Tourville. The fort was strengthened in 1861 its appearance remaining largely unchanged until today. It was once known as the “island of festivals” a place of vibrant celebrations.

Its military purpose faded with the modernization of weaponry. The fort was sold to André Laval a wealthy Marseille industrialist. He gifted it to his wife Liane Degaby a celebrated Belle Époque artist. Alas in the 1920s looting and vandalism brought about its abandonment. The island changed hands numerous times. Various ambitious projects hotels casinos even a dance hall were proposed yet remained unrealized.

Finally in 2001 the Île d’Endoume found new life. It was bought and transformed into a luxurious venue for seminars and receptions. Its history is one of transformation from a strategic military outpost to a place of elegant gatherings.

But the island is more than just history. It’s a natural haven. Discover a natural well and a sea cave. The crystal clear waters shift from deep blue to emerald green. Gaze across the water and see the Rocher des Pendus a striking rock formation. It overlooks Anse Malmousque a picturesque cove.

The Île d’Endoume. A place of contrasts a blend of military history artistic legacy and natural beauty. It’s a captivating reminder of Marseille’s rich and vibrant past. A place where the echoes of the past mingle with the promise of the future. A true gem in the Mediterranean sun.
