A small group of believers met at 1424 N Massasoit the home of Deacon John Cousett. For four years they searched for a spiritual leader. Then in 1989 Rev Ira J Acree became their pastor and shepherd.
Greater Saint Johns Missionary Baptist Church journey wasn’t without its challenges. It moved several times finding temporary homes before settling at 5320 W North Avenue in 1992. There the church flourished. Its Early Morning Worship Service started at 8 am to accommodate its growing congregation. Five years later in 1997 Greater Saint Johns Missionary Baptist Church found its current location at 1256 N Waller Avenue. The congregation sang “We’ve Come This Far By Faith” as they moved. Their faith was well-founded. Membership grew to over 1500 active members.

In 2008 its choir Voices of Greater Saint Johns recorded Glorify which was released in 2010. They even became regional finalists in a Verizon Wireless contest. In 2019 Greater Saint Johns Missionary Baptist Church celebrated a significant milestone paying off its mortgage at 1256 N Waller Avenue.
