Colonel Georges Delmas. A name whispered on the Rue du Commandant Delmas, a street that holds more than just concrete and cobblestones. It holds the echoes of a life lived with unwavering courage and dedication. Rue du Commandant Delmas, located in Charenton-le-Pont, is a tribute to this extraordinary man, a hero of two World Wars and a key figure in the French Resistance. Born in Cahors in 1890, Delmas’s life was intertwined with military service from a young age. He began as a volunteer firefighter and quickly rose through the ranks during World War I. His bravery, marked by eleven citations and numerous decorations, including the Legion of Honor, made him a legend. Rue du Commandant Delmas whispers tales of his nine wartime wounds, a testament to his unwavering commitment in the face of adversity. After the war, Delmas served in the Levant campaign and continued his distinguished military career. His experience led him to become a chef d’escadron in the gendarmerie in Chaumont in 1936. The Rue du Commandant Delmas also holds the memory of his defiance against the Nazi occupation. Refusing to serve the Vichy government, he retired in 1942 and joined the Resistance under the alias “Drouot”. Leading a group of 60 men, he played a pivotal role in disrupting German operations. His actions in Gigouzac in 1944, where his group inflicted significant casualties on the Waffen-SS, earned him another citation. The Rue du Commandant Delmas stands as a silent salute to Delmas’s refusal to yield. He continued to fight for his country, earning the Medal of Resistance. He rose to the rank of Colonel, a title that resonated with his unwavering dedication. Despite his desire to serve in Indochina, he was denied and eventually retired to his birthplace, where he passed away in 1967. Rue du Commandant Delmas. More than just a street. It is a testament to a man whose life embodied courage, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to his country.
