The addition however thrived. It became home to prominent citizens. Three Garland mayors lived here. A school board president resided here too. So did five city councilmen. This wasn’t just a neighborhood. It was a hub of civic leadership.
These homes represent some of the finest architecture of their day. The houses on South 11th Street between Avenues B and D were remarkable. They are a testament to the craftsmanship of that era. Many houses date back to 1915-1918. They boast interesting features. One home is said to be the first in Garland with an indoor plumbed bathroom. This is quite a remarkable feature for its time. Another home withstood the deadly 1927 tornado. These homes were more than residences. They were the sites of countless gatherings. The Pace House a significant building was also rededicated that day. It was moved to 317 South 11th Street in 2014. Today it serves as a residential building not a city event center.
