This magnificent palace whispers tales of prominent figures and grand gatherings. Its walls have witnessed the ebb and flow of Lisbon’s history. They’ve borne silent witness to significant events shaping Portugal’s destiny.

The Palácio dos Viscondes de Lançada boasts a rich heritage. It originally belonged to Manuel de Sampaio de Pina e Brederode. He was the ancestor of the Viscounts of Lançada and the Dukes of Palmela. The palace’s original structure included a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Remnants of this chapel were visible for years. They were even seen in the newspaper’s workshops. They remain visible even today though much reduced.

For a significant period in the last century the palace’s halls were renowned for their intellectual gatherings. Dona Maria Krus wife of Dom Pedro de Menezes de Brito do Rio resided here. Her salons drew many illustrious figures of the past century. Politicians parliamentarians historians poets and diplomats graced her halls. Think of luminaries like Garrett José Estêvão Feliciano de Castilho and Bulhão Pato. They contributed to the vibrant intellectual climate. This literary salon predated that of Dona Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho. Hers was another center of intellectual and distinguished gatherings in the late 19th century.

In 1892 the building was purchased by the heirs of the Visconde da Lançada. In 1881 the newspaper O Século was founded. It started publishing from this building. The newspaper’s founder Magalhães Lima was a fervent republican propagandist. The newspaper expanded its facilities. In 1921 it purchased the adjacent property to add to its offices and workshops. This expansion included incorporating the worker’s quarters initially built in 1905. The expansion gradually absorbed those quarters into the growing offices and annexes.

The Palácio dos Viscondes de Lançada showcases the architecture of its time. It has some rooms staircases and other features with the noble lines typical of the 18th-century style. A visit to the palace’s main staircase reveals beautiful 18th-century tile panels. These panels represent the palace’s appearance in the 19th century. The Palácio dos Viscondes de Lançada stands as a symbol of Lisbon’s past a structure that has witnessed centuries of changes in the city’s evolution. Today it houses the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Transition. It shares walls with the Palácio dos Carvalhos adding another layer to its unique history.
