Gazing at the Grand Calumet River today, it’s hard to imagine it teeming with life. This 13-mile stretch winding through Gary, East Chicago, and Hammond, Indiana, carries a heavy legacy. The Grand Calumet River wasn’t always an industrial waterway. It once flowed freely into Lake Michigan at Miller Beach, a natural outlet before canals and industry reshaped its destiny. The name “Calumet” likely comes from Native American languages, perhaps Miami or Potawatomi, possibly meaning “long water river.” Before the steel mills and factories, the river was a different world.
The Grand Calumet River now flows into Lake Michigan primarily through the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal. A smaller portion, at its western end, joins the Calumet River and eventually reaches the Mississippi River. The river is split into East and West branches. The East Branch begins in Gary’s Marquette Park, flowing through lagoons within Indiana Dunes National Park before entering the industrial heart of Gary. The West Branch straddles the border of East Chicago and Hammond. The Indiana Harbor Canal itself is sometimes considered part of the Grand Calumet River, adding another three miles to its length.
The Grand Calumet River flows through the Calumet Lacustrine Plain, a sandy area next to Lake Michigan. Groundwater contributes to the river’s flow, but less than 10%. This groundwater originates from the shallow Calumet Aquifer. The river’s history is intertwined with the industrial growth of the region. In the late 19th century, industries began to line the riverbanks, and pollution became an increasing problem. The construction of the Gary Works steel mill in 1905 significantly altered the river’s course. The Indiana Harbor Canal’s completion in 1906 further changed the flow, establishing the pattern we see today. By the mid-20th century, the Grand Calumet River had become heavily polluted, unable to support most life forms.
Sadly, around 90% of the Grand Calumet River’s flow is now industrial and municipal wastewater. It’s designated a Great Lakes Area of Concern, impaired in all 14 beneficial uses. These impairments range from fish consumption advisories to habitat degradation. The river’s sediments hold a toxic legacy of PCBs, PAHs, and heavy metals. Nonpoint sources, like contaminated sediment and industrial runoff, add to the problem. Point sources, including wastewater discharges and combined sewer overflows, contribute significant pollutants. The river’s watershed is relatively small, covering less than 50 square miles. While fish populations were decimated, efforts are underway to restore the ecosystem. The headwaters still support some native species, like the Iowa darter. Nature preserves along the lower East Branch protect remnants of the rare dune and swale habitat. These areas provide a refuge for threatened species like the Karner blue butterfly. Though scarred by industry, the Grand Calumet River remains a vital part of the region’s story. Efforts to clean up the river and restore its ecosystem offer hope for a healthier future.
