Picture this. You stand before McLaren Lodge. This grand building whispers tales of San Francisco’s history. Built in 1896 it served a dual purpose. It was the home of John McLaren the park’s superintendent. It also housed the San Francisco Parks Department’s headquarters.

McLaren Lodge isn’t just a house. It’s a landmark. It reflects San Francisco’s architectural heritage. Its rustic stone exterior echoes the Richardsonian Romanesque style. Some even call it Moorish-Gothic. The eighteen-inch thick ashlar basalt masonry walls are impressive. Sandstone quoins add to the building’s unique beauty.

John McLaren lived here for 47 years. He was a key figure in Golden Gate Park’s development. He planted millions of trees. He fiercely protected the park. He famously hid statues by planting trees around them. He even had a statue erected for him after his death. It’s the only one in the park without a pedestal. He was known as a grumpy man. He also handed out candy to children every Sunday.

After McLaren’s death in 1943 the building remained the park department’s headquarters. Julian L Girod the sixth superintendent moved in. Later the building’s sections were combined to form the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department. Today McLaren Lodge is a registered San Francisco landmark. It is also home to the San Francisco Parks Alliance.

McLaren Lodge is more than just a building. It’s a testament to a man and a city. It’s a historical treasure. It’s a place where history and nature meet. A place worth exploring. A place that stands as a symbol of San Francisco’s rich past.
