Gazing across the Water of Leith, can you sense the silent figures watching us? This is Antony Gormley’s 6 TIMES RIGHT Sculpture. It’s a series of six life-sized iron figures, installed in 2010. They stand as a poignant connection between the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the sea. 6 TIMES RIGHT isn’t just a static display. These figures interact with the river itself. Four of them are placed within the Water of Leith, acting as living gauges for the water level. They were originally designed to tip over in high water, minimizing flood risk. However, this led to concerns about theft. So, in 2019, they were permanently fixed upright. Imagine the river flowing around these iron men, rising and falling with the tides. The figures are spread out along the Water of Leith. One is buried up to its neck on the grounds of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. Others stand downstream in Stockbridge, Powderhall, and Bonnington. Each looks in a different direction, creating a sense of silent observation. The final figure stands at the end of a pier in Leith Docks. It gazes out to sea, marking the river’s final journey. These figures, modeled after Gormley himself, are made of cast iron. Over time, a layer of rust has formed. This adds a haunting beauty to the sculptures. It’s as if they are slowly becoming part of the landscape, witnesses to the passage of time. 6 TIMES RIGHT is more than just art. It’s an experience, a connection between the city, the river, and the sea. It invites us to reflect on our own place within the natural world.
