Established in 1553, the Facultad de Medicina of UNAM has witnessed centuries of medical history unfold. The Facultad de Medicina isn’t just a building; it’s a living testament to the evolution of medical knowledge in Mexico and the Americas. As part of the Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico, the Facultad de Medicina began its journey as one of the earliest medical schools in the Americas. Three of UNAM’s most recent rectors, including the current one, emerged from these very halls, demonstrating the Facultad de Medicina’s impact on Mexican academia. While the original building housed the institution for centuries, the Facultad de Medicina eventually found its current home in Ciudad Universitaria, close to the School of Chemistry and Odontology. The main complex is divided into seven distinct buildings, further expanding its reach with annexes in various hospitals throughout Mexico City’s metropolitan area. The Department of Experimental Medicine, notably situated within the General Hospital of Mexico, exemplifies this network of medical collaboration. Even beyond the physical structures, the Facultad de Medicina’s influence extends across the nation. It administers the ENARM, the National Exam of Medical Residencies, a crucial step for any aspiring resident in Mexico. Thousands of medical graduates face this challenging exam yearly, striving to secure their place in the medical field. From its historical roots to its modern influence, the Facultad de Medicina stands as a beacon of medical education and research in Mexico.
